I was obsessed with smoothies for a little bit during Uni, maybe because it’s just so easy to drink haha. I found Cupp, which sounded quite promising, and dragged my friend along with me. Cupp is pretty much a grab-and-go salad and smoothie bar, but there were a few seats outside in the arcade, and that’s where we sat.

Chicken and Avocado Salad (L) – $12.00

My friend grabbed the chicken and avocado salad. She did find the chicken breast a little dry, but the addition of rocket, red cabbage and quinoa made it quite interesting texture wise. If only there was more avocado though haha.

Wake Me – $8.50

I’m always in need of a good caffeine hit, especially since I had a tute after lunch, so it was a no-brainer to choose the Wake Me, with an espresso shot thrown in there. The avocado added some creaminess to the smoothie, whilst making it quite substantial. The dates and vanilla essence provided sweetness to counterbalance the espresso. It’s definitely one of my favourite smoothie combination.s

With Summer upon us, I can see my frequenting places like Cupp for a light lunch, or just a smoothie for on-the-go. They offer a $15 deal for a salad and smoothie on Mondays, and the girl was kind enough to give us some vouchers for the same deal on a Tuesday too!
How to get there:
Cupp is located on Collins Street, ten minutes walk from Flinders St Station.

Five Plus Smoothie

It looks like the #cleaneating trend is here to stay, with more and more green smoothie and salad bars popping up left, right and centre. One of my friend has been obsessed with Five Plus for a while now, and she took me there on their one year anniversary!

It pretty much looked like other smoothie bars, with a clean and minimal design, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables on display.

The Perfect Date – $9.00

With almond, cinnamon, banana, oats, dates, almond milk and ice, this smoothie tasted more almond-y than date-y to me, but hey, there isn’t a good pun with almond in it so what can you do. Regardless, it was creamy and sweet, and tasted pretty good for a healthy smoothie.

Strawberry Shortcake – $9.00

Of course I went for the pink strawberry smoothie, because okay, I’m gonna tell you a secret – I’m not that into actual green smoothies. Horror. No one scream in my ears about the 123739842173 benefits of vegetables please. Anyway, although it looked super pink, it didn’t taste overly fruit-y, but it was sweet enough for me to appreciate it. Oh, and it pretty much had the same ingredients as the Perfect Date, just swap out the almond and cinnamon with cashew and strawberries.

Peanut Butter Protein Ball

We also got a little tube – okay I lied it’s pretty big, a big tube of protein balls. Because health. And because I totally need some protein after my workout you know. Jokes. The balls tasted good (sorry my sense of humour is still high school level). They were rich and creamy and peanut buttery, I’m sure it’ll fill you right up after leg day.

We also got a little goodie bag because it was their anniversary. I love food puns, and this place was filled with them. I’m still confused by the fact that people just eat goji berries as is, since idk, I’ve always had them in soups growing up, but hey, who am I to defy #health.

The place may look tiny, but there’s quite a few seats inside if you decide to chill for a bit, or people-watch, ’cause that’s fun too.
Oh and don’t get purple patch, it was super watery, sorry I didn’t manage to get a photo, it does look pretty but it’s not worth it just for an instagram-worthy photo, trust me.
How to get there:
Five Plus Smoothie is on Little Lonsdale Street, literally 100 metres away from Melbourne Central.

Nutrition Bar

Green smoothies, acai bowls, raw food, just a few selections from the #cleaneating trend that Melbourne has been crazy about for a while now and it’s still going strong. Nutrition Bar joined the scene with its clean cut interior, no fuss menu, and a display of a range of healthy food and snacks.

Left: Green Colada – $8.50
Right: Green and Lean – $8.50

I picked the least green smoothie sounding green smoothie off the menu (ofc LOL). The Green Colada had things like pineapple, mint, spinach (for da colour DUH), coconut meat, coconut water and lime. It tasted decent, with pineapple and mint being the dominating flavours, which meant, it didn’t really taste all that green, a tick in my book.

My friend went down the healthier route (I feel like I say this way too often… LOL) and ordered the Green and Lean, it was concocted with ingredients that you see all the time on any nutrition instagram page – spinach, mint, parsley, lemon, cucumber, celery, ginger and coconut water. Given all the vegetables and mint that’s been chucked into this smoothie, it tasted better than I expected.

A lot of reviews commented on the poor service, but I have to disagree. Okay they weren’t all smiles like Uniqlo, but it was decent enough, maybe I was lucky, or maybe others weren’t, hard to say haha.

I wish Nutrition Bar would be more accessible, I know that it’s already got three stores in Richmond, Windsor, and St Kilda, but idk, I don’t think I’m one to travel that far for something that’s quite simple, given that everything’s pretty much take-away. I would love to try out the selection of acai bowls that they offer if I ever am near one of their locations though!

How to get there:
Nutrition Bar is located on Swan Street, 10 minutes walk from Richmond station.
